I've alluded to this in a few prior posts...in coaching, for whatever reason, the star athletes are lousy coaches. The best teachers/coaches are the guys who were mediocre athletes. I know I'm generalizing here, but I think there's something to this idea. Whitey Herzog was often quoted as referring to his marginal ability as a major leaguer made him a better manager.
