Luther felt the ‘real Church’ was an invisible institution held only by the faith of men. The state, - German princes, the German Reich, was the only true temporal reality, not the Church of Rome. Pretty easy to verify. Even reformed Protestant historians have linked Luthers dismissal of the moral law on the basis of ‘salvation alone’ with the eventual rise of the Fuhrer and the absolutism of the state.

As he once said, “no one need think that the world can be ruled without blood, the civil sword shall and must be red and bloody.”

Historically Germans have had a desire to be free of restraints of any kind recognizing only the authority of the state. A great man is needed to lead, Bismarck, Fredrick the Great, and you know who. Luther dismissed the moral law and was the avowed enemy of reason.

His platform was earthy, populist, nationalist while the Church at the time help to historical, hierarchal, and catholic. Look how things church/state relations of evolved over the last several centuries
