college sports. There is no close 2nd anymore (even my B1G-alum friends agree with that).
I don't think there will be a 16 x 4 super-conference alignment. The PAC, in particular, has no quality expansion options and they're NOT going to expand for the sake of expansion. All that would do is dilute their brand, which is already weak compared to the other P4 leagues.
The ACC and B1G have a route to 16, but not both.
It's possible the ACC could convince Maryland to return, and add ND as a full member, getting them to 16. But then the B1G would have 13 members and no worthwhile expansion targets.
It's also possible the B1G could pry UVA and ND from the ACC, getting them to 16. But then the ACC would have 13 members no worthwhile expansion targets.
To be clear, I think NEITHER of those scenarios are likely. I will backtrack on my previous assertion by saying the ACC scenario is within the realm of possibility, barely. The odds of the B1G poaching UVA and/or ND aren't much better.
So, overall, I think this new P4 alignment (PAC @ 12, B1G @ 14, ACC @ 15, SEC @ 16) is here to stay, and that bodes really well for the future of the SEC.
