Will you lose fat, sure, but you will also lose lean because you are not eating protein. And some will say that the body will preferentially use protein for energy vs fat at first. Some others will say you will lose some overall energy as a saving mechanism.

The best I have found overall is through carb control. There has been good research that has shown what carb intake is needed at different levels of activity and whether you want to gain or lose weight, but encourages protein intake to reduce lean loss, and it also keeps hunger much better controlled.
