The fire to win is there, but he won't compromise his values to do so. Don't know how far that can take you in today's P-5 world. Like you, if good things come to good people, then hopefully he'll win big someday; and if he doesn't, I understand those who want someone who will. It'll be what it'll be, but like the old addage goes, if I had a son who could play D-1 basketball, I'd be thrilled if he played for Coach Martin.
