Yes, once in a while, the SC intervenes, but by and large, it does not. The best recent example is when they the approval of the ACA. They also punt many times by usage of "lack of standing".
But the most eye opening is all of the immunity government agents are given to tear down citizen rights because of various interpretations of probable cause, or a different use of force standard than a private citizen. And if you attack a government agent, not only can they use deadly force upon you, they can also charge you with extra crimes.
On top of that, the police, prosecutor, and judge all get paid by the government.
