Put shifts on for batters now. If you are a major league player who cannot slap the ball down an empty third base line for a hit you should not be in majors. And if players would just do that a few times that shift would disappear and you could go back to swinging away.
The problem is not that hits are any harder to come by today it is that players are being taught to swing for the fences every at bat.
