Why do ASU and UofA need a rivalry with Texas schools

They currently have an intense rivalry with each other. Secondly, they have budding rivalries with the California schools. ASU and UofA recruit California intensely. Thirdly, USC and UCLA are about a day's drive from both UofA and ASU. Cal and Stanford can be driven in a day, albeit a big day. There are also direct flights.
There are numerous business ties between Southern California and Arizona, but virtually none between Arizona and Texas with the exception that a very large amount of Mexican grown produce enters the U.S. at Nogales and then heads East on various Interstate highways.
The net result is ASU and UofA types interact a good deal with USC and UCLA folks outside of the college football world, far more than they interact with Tech, TCU and UT folks.
