upcoming generations? Building knowledge is a pretty useless pursuit if you don’t also have a way to preserve and pass that knowledge to others.
I have never kidded myself about my knowledge of either math or physics, both are extremely limited compared to what some others can do. But at the same time it is vastly superior to what most people know about the subjects.
And teaching is not just about a knowledge base you must also have the skills to impart that knowledge to other people. One of my undergrad physics professors was the most brilliant person I have ever met. He was also the absolute worst teacher I have ever met. He could not teach the concepts because he could not teach the skills required. He just assumed that everyone had the same level of understanding and the same skill set as he did and he had no idea how to break it down for others to learn.
