I don't get the concept of it being a dumb contract

He was taking over probably the worst rebuild job in the modern history of college athletics, and we are in the best and most lucrative conference in the nation that once cared more than almost all other SEC programs about men's basketball. Obviously we had to make a serious and long term commitment to land any legitimate candidate to get them to undertake this task. And the contract had merit based extension clauses that Cuonzo reached in year 1 by doing a good job.
It hasn't worked out thus far, but are we suggesting that the better approach after being a D2 program for 3 seasons would have been to offer a terrible contract without much job security or SEC comparable pay?
