If it was 5 years for a first offense it would still have been an injustice. As noted elsewhere, had he burned an effigy of Trump or an American flag while publicly proclaiming how much he hated either one there would have been no felony & no hate crime, and probably no arrest, much less conviction and jail time.
Fwiw, he was also given an extra year for the crime of harrassment, hence the 16 year sentence.
