These quotes don't sound like someone "rejecting" membership in the Big 10:

When they met with the Big Ten:

And then there was no advertising, no promotion, it was just a discussion. Kind of a fact finding discussion. Commissioner Delany was awesome. He really was. He was first class all along. And then they made a decision at some point when they expanded that they were going to go with Nebraska.”

They then thought they were in danger of being left out:
