the ku starting lineup around Manning was essentially supposed to be Archie Marshall, Marvin Branch, Otis Livingston, Kevin Pritchard. Only Pritchard was left by season's end. ku had to do something that is very foreign to it now - rely on good coaching. No matter what one says, Larry Brown is a very good coach, and did a very good job piecing a good defensive team out of scraps to complement one lone good offensive player at year's end.
Mizzou had similar issues losing Lynn Hardy for most of the season and so many random minor issue that nobody came even close to starting every game. It's telling that the 1989 Mizzou team was so much better but with essentially all the same players just trading freshman Peeler for seniors Cheivous and Hardy - if anything the 1988 Mizzou team simply had too many starter level players that the pieces just never quite meshed.
