And the points you bring up have been debated for centuries.
Easy to argue that altruism is a totally selfish tendency if the reason one practices it is to generate within oneself that sense of righteous good work. Thus does one ever act from a perspective or total selflessness?
My criticism of the Christian Ethos is that it is sorely tainted if one does and behaves well and/or "accepts Jesus" for the sole purpose of this alleged gift of eternal life. I think it better when one gives a person a coat only b/c the guy needed a coat and not to score points w/the big guy. If one "accepts Jesus" so that he can "go to heaven", that seems a fraud.
