How exactly are these numbers known?

I mean, I guess if you're tracking all the visas that come in, and then those that go back out again you can get the "visa overstayer" number.

How in the world do you even know how many people are crossing the border illegally? It's got to be some sort of estimate, right? How is that even figured out?
