... a true ace.
A Bob Gibson-like bulldog.
We've won only two World Titles in the last 36 years --- and we ONLY won them because Carp was lights out in both World Series and Albert Pujols was hitting 3rd.
We have zero titles in the past 36 years without Carp and Pujols.
In 2011, Berkman hit .301 / .412 / .547 / .959. 34 homers. 94 RBI. 90 wuns. 56 extra base hits.
That's a monstrous loss.
2011... our 3, 4 hitters
.299 .366 .541 .906
.301 .412 .547 .959
And of course... we had ace Carpenter leading the charge out of the rotation.
That 2011 team... even with Pujols, Berkman and Carp all healthy and productive, barely won 90 games and only snuck into the playoffs due to a historical Braves collapse.
And then you take that team and essentially throw away Pujols, Berkman and Carpenter.
Matheny inherited a franchise that had won only 1 division title (91 wins) in the 5 years prior.
In the 6 years prior to Matheny taking over, they won:
83
76
86
91
86
90
Decent... not great. Average 85 wins. 67% of time we won less than 90 games during that period.
Then at the conclusion of those 6 years we lose Dave Duncan. Pujols. We lose Carpenter. We lose Berkman.
The all-star talent has been getting considerably worse every year, year after year since 2011.
And yet... Matheny goes on to win
88
97 * best in baseball
90
100 * best in baseball
86
83
91 win average. 90 wins 50% of the time. 3 division titles. 3 NLCS appearances.
We actually got better and won more games.
