A comparison of Garry Pinkel and Barry Odom as Tiger Head Football Coach needs to consider some differences in age and experience.
Pinkel was 48 when he became the Tigers' Head Coach. He had been an aassitant to Don James for 16 years, the bulk of those at UDub, and MAC head coach for a decade.
Odom was 38 when he took the Tiger job, he had 7 years as an assistant, four at Mizzou. He had the advantage of having spent the prior 3 seasons at Mizzou, making him more familiar with the program, staff and players.
The difference in experience is significant. Pinkel had an ample opportunity to make his first head coaching mistakes in the MAC. Odom has made his in the SEC East. Bottom line is Pinkel was significantly farther long the coaching learning curve than Odomo.
And I would also suggest that Pinkel faced an easier taks making Mizzou competitive in the Big XII in 2001 than Odom is facing in the making Mizzou competitive in the SEC East.
