We ran an old-school motion offense with the point guard starting out top, the shooting guard and small forward starting on the wings, and the power forward and center starting on the blocks. The 2 and 3 were largely interchangeable in that offense, and their home (at least to start) was the wing.
I think it's more commonly used when those two positions are treated as interchangeable parts on a team (which describes most teams now).
Just did a quick search on here, and references to "wings" or "wing players" go back to August 2009 (which I think is where the archive ends).
