Former prep basketball standout Gary “Cat” Johnson from Joplin Memorial was honored Wednesday afternoon by the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
Johnson was the point guard on the Memorial teams that won Class 3A state championships in 1977 and 1978. His senior year the Eagles averaged 93 points per game — the second-highest mark in state history — and Memorial whipped St. Louis McKinley 97-69 in the state championship game.
Johnson scored 50 points in a playoff game against Marshfield at McDonald Arena in Springfield, and he had 18 assists against Lebanon in his senior season.
After high school, Johnson played four years at Oral Roberts University and totaled 1,059 points and 481 assists. He’s one of 22 players in school history to reach 1,000 points, and his assists are second on the school’s career list. He averaged 14 points as a senior when ORU played in the NIT at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Johnson helped ORU post 18-win seasons his junior and senior seasons, including victories over Kansas, Marquette and Georgetown.
After college Johnson was drafted by the New Jersey Nets of the American Basketball Association, but he turned down the ABA team and played eight seasons in Europe. He lives in Joplin.
