I have made the drive to Destin a few times.

We usually take I-70 to STL, drop down through Memphis amd Mississippi and then drive along the coast util we get to Destin.

We returned through Alabama the last time and it trimmed a few minutes off the trip but I always enjoy the drive along the Gulf Coast. Being from the midwest I can see trees anytime I want driving along the coast is somewhat unique for us.
