The next 12 games should tell us a lot. I'm not so worried if we lose to Arizona and UCLA. Those teams just have way more talent than us right now. But it would be nice to see either Daniel or Rice just shut down one of them and keep it close so we have a chance to steal one.
But if we only go .500, or worse, against the group of South Florida, Marshall, Florida Atlantic, Oklahoma State, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and BYU, then it's probably a sign that we are in for another long season.
I have high hopes for Eli Daniel. Maybe it's mostly wishful thinking. Because if she, and probably Rice too, don't turn out to be really, really good, then it could take several years in the wilderness to once again get to the level of challenging for a top 16 seed, since we signed zero pitchers for next year after Danielle Williams recommitted without much notice.
Counting on non D1 transfer pitchers to make a team nationally relevant is usually a fools game, but it worked big time for Ole Miss last year. Oklahoma State may have hit the jackpot too. They brought in several transfers after losing their best two pitchers from last year, and one of them, a girl from Lamar MO who was a stud in D2 at Pittsburg State, went the distance in their win over #7 Arizona.
