Promoting education is good public policy. Discouraging education is bad public policy. An educated population produces benefits for society as a whole, sometimes called externalities. The prior policy promoted education in two ways. First by lowering the cost of obtaining instructors, allowing lower tuition. Second by allowing students of more limited means to get a graduate degree. There is legitimate concern that as state funding for universities have fallen, their student bodies are become more and more populated with children from high income families. This further erodes popular support for education and by limiting the student population pool, results in mediocrity as the dullard students from wealthy families attend in larger numbers and fewer bright students from lower middle class families attend.
You are falling into a classic class warfare tactic, of ignoring the public interest and focusing on a narrow view of individual equity.
But you are entitled to your opinion. I would be interested in hearing your comments on the obvious public policy implications.
