Everybody has had their down era because they hired one or more coaches who couldn't cut it.
In the 90's, Oklahoma and Alabama were bad. Florida was never big before Spurrier and failed on multiple hires since. Michigan, Ohio St, Georgia, Florida St, Tennessee, Nebraska, Notre Dame, USC, the list goes on and on. They have all tanked under a poor coaching hire.
Depending on the school and the coach, the timeframe for the return to the top can vary greatly.
Saban could take over Mizzou and probably win the SEC in year 3. And no, I'm not saying he would ever leave Bama for MU. Just making a point about the ability of some coaches. Chip Kelly would take twice as long.
