The criminal division is not involved in audits unless the audit division makes a fraud referral to them. Supposedly only Trumps corporate returns were under audit, so unless the CI division has been investigating his personal returns they have in all likely hood not been involved and are now, either because of a fraud referral and/or specific request by the special prosecutor. I'm inclined to think the latter is the case since the Tresury Department's Office of Intelligence and Analysis has only been involved a few weeks according to reports. If you're not familiar with that group, they are the guys who track funds believed to having ties to foreign money laundering schemes. Interesting development- will have to see where it goes as it's typically a long process.
That said, their involvement now does not mean there is fraud-only the presence of fraud indicators. Either way, CI is one of the better, if not the best financial crime investigation units that exists and when they do conclude fraud exists they have a 90%+ successful prosecution rate.. Interesting
