to retain the job is to continue to crater things to the point where it is simply not feasible to get an adequate replacement. I think if you can construct the argument that MU doesn't care about men's basketball and has given up on the sport, you have an avenue to retain him. Otherwise I don't think there is any realistic scenario where he can actually do enough on the court to justify his retainment if we were serious about competing in men's basketball.
Hopefully he fails to a lesser degree, and that allows him to step aside and retire with some sort of dignity and pride.
