Quarterbacks that start and play a lot as true freshman either play because they are better than everyone else or play because there is no alternative. Lock is a clear case of the latter. Mauk was a flaming disaster last year, so Lock has to step up.
Mind you that Lock did not show up early in the spring last season either. He shows up typically undersized and suddenly starting in the SEC.
He may not be the next Joe Montana but I think it's a little early to cast him off. Another year in the system and some better protection will do wonders. Plus, I saw him stepping up in the pocket in the Spring Game. Some guys never learn to do that. That's a good sign, especially in the SEC where you have so many fast DEs crushing the pocket that the underneath middle routes are open a lot. Now if Stonehands Culkin can catch something, we might be in business.
