Then next year as 2026 campaigns start up, the GOP can run on Democrats resisting help to clean up the streets.

Deploying the NG to DC is completely performative, but Democrats really screwed themselves.

They could have responded by going into the media calmly and said that what Trump is doing is only a short term suppression of crime. They could list the anti-crime programs Trump cut the budgets for, and point out the ugly history of military being turned on citizens and wish to not be anywhere near that. Then say that if Trump really wanted to help, he should allocate federal funding for police departments in high crime cities to hire more officers.

Instead they flipped out giving the GOP something else to campaign on next year.
