First time he beat the Dem incumbent who was facing some severe corruption charges.
He lost the gubernatorial election to Abbott, whose popularity among the dominant GOP class was and remains mixed, by 11 points.
He lost the '18 senate race to Ted Cruz by about 1.5 points, which some still point to as a sign of Beto's popularity and a purple Texas. What they don't tell you is that Cruz barely campaigned. To get a Cruz yard sign that year you had to buy one off Amazon from an independent seller (not affiliated or financed by the campaign). Cruz only had one debate with Beto, which he won. Also, Cruz was, at the time, very unpopular with what we now call the MAGA crowd. Cruz dissed Trump after losing to him in '16, and was not friendly to his agenda in the following two years. Many stayed home, as the undervote in this race showed. I think Cruz saw this as a wakeup call, buried his hatchet with Trump, and got on board the MAGA train.
