But what was the immediate need for this injunction?

Why does it matter to a newborn if they are a citizen or not? If they had let this case case play out the SC will be making a ruling in the next year or so. If it is stuck down it would be simple to then retroactively grant those infants citizenship.
BUT
It probably does not work in the other direction. If the SC rules that birthright citizenship does not apply I doubt they will be able to rescind the citizenship this judge just ordered for them.
So this injunction could cause irepperable harm when there was no possible irreparable harm from just letting it play out. Once again a leftist judge wanted to play executive.
