you have to put an asterisk there because there were two Republican Speaker candidates this session: one who had the backing of a majority of Republicans, and another who had the backing of a minority of Republicans but ALL the Democrats. The latter guy who had a minority of Rs but all of the Ds is the one who won the vote on the combined strength of those two factions.
And guess what: the Rs he had were the more moderate Rs. The hardcore Trump type Rs voted for the other guy.
So when the Speaker decides to adjourn rather than recess or make any other sort of move that has the effect of giving the Dems time to abscond and stop a Trump backed plan, you have to take a step back and ask whether he and the other moderate Rs who were part of his team deliberately allowed that to happen or not.
If the Speaker does his job well, we will never know the answer to that question.
