In 1898, a parcel of land south of Kansas City was purchased by a settler from Idaho named Raymore G. Peculiar. Shortly thereafter and just before incorporating the land, Peculiar died. A clerical error at the County divided it into Raymore-Peculiar and before the correction could be made, it was legally determined the name must stand as submitted and approved. The Peculiar family threatened a lawsuit, but eventually determined that the cost to do so would be astronomical, as they were people of few means.
