Lee's Summit, Missouri, is named for two reasons: "Summit" refers to the town's location on the highest point of the railroad line between Kansas City and St. Louis, and "Lee" is believed to be a misspelling of the name of early settler Dr. Pleasant John Graves Lea, according to local historians. While some believe it was named after Confederate General Robert E. Lee, local historians and a reader at The Kansas City Star say the evidence overwhelmingly supports the connection to Dr. Lea
