Very few programs cared about the results of college basketball games in the 1940s to the degree of paying players. The few that were became ‘blue bloods’. Eventually the NCAA was created to police that sort of stuff, but the blue bloods were never accountable to the NCAA on account of that early established cheating.
MU wasn’t even offering athletic scholarships for basketball at that point, much less trying to purchase talent.
