The author, Philosophy Coded, explains Bonhoeffer's thesis from his secular, philosophical viewpoint, though Bonhoeffer had a far more spiritual/religious worldview, of course.
I agree with your insight that the spiritual is critical here, but disagree with your contention that organized religions are poison in this context.
Ultimately, the question comes down to Pontius Pilate's question, what is (the) truth? In reality, however, it really comes doewn to Who is Truth? I assert that the answer to that question is: Jesus Christ.
If Jesus Christ is God, and Jesus founded a Church(1), and that Church is the Catholic Church(2) then it would make perfect sense to follow that Church and to become a member of Her. Indeed it would be foolish not to do so, no?
