It's always been that way!! People have have their own moral code and principles.... they have always wanted the State to enforce rules to abolish or control things they dislike and want the pure freedom to do what ever they feel is appropriate.
What has changed is the Majority of People use to have Close to the same values or at least it appeared that way do to people living regional lives with minimal contact with people from outside their living radius..... now not so much with travel and the world wide web people are exposed to more. Hence the continued confrontations of opposing groups with different values.
