Senator Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican who has warned that he opposes Medicaid cuts, said on Wednesday that he could not support the sprawling tax and budget bill House Republicans are advancing because it would “cut health care for the working poor. “
“Over 20 percent of Missourians, including hundreds of thousands of children, are on Medicaid,” Mr. Hawley said on CNN. “They’re not on Medicaid because they want to be. They’re on Medicaid because they cannot afford health insurance in the private market.”
Mr. Hawley argued that the budget bill that House Republicans are pushing forward to enact President Trump’s domestic agenda would harm “working people and their children.” He added, “It’s just wrong to go and cut their health care when they’re trying to make ends meet.”
