Woods monetary system was put into place, but the US had been a very strong, probably THE strongest currency for much of that time. Indeed, the world thought of the US dollar as being "As good as gold", particularly since it was in fact backed by gold and could be exchanged for gold at a fixed exchange rate virtually anywhere in the world.
