regarding the necessary effects of rebalancing global trade are questionable.

You are painting a picture of a drop in the US standard of living caused by a balanced trade balance with the rest of the world. But if we look at the time in history when the US had a net positive balance of trade with the rest of the world we had the highest standard of living in the world.

How do you reconcile your assertion with the historical facts?
