It was designed to be a safety net for some and a supplement for most.

It was never supposed to be a primary source of retirement income for 70 million people.

Also, no one is owed a 'living wage'. If you find yourself needing more income than you are currently bringing in it is on you to develop the skills that will make you marketable at a higher income.
