You cannot under-estimate the ‘creating confidence and belief’ part of coaching. Gates couldn’t pull his team out of an epic tailspin last year. And couldn’t after the Bama game this year. The guy is not the answer. But, it doesn’t matter, the inept administration will keep him around another 2-3 years and then hired another unproven reach of a coach that won’t do anything. It is the albatross of this program.
