being invaded. Limiting Russia. Protecting democracy, IF Ukraine were actually a democracy.

But no one has really outlined what pressing US interest there is in Ukraine that would suggest that the US should invest hundreds of billions in their defense.

I believe Trump has the correct approach here. Limit further damage by ending this as quickly as possible, get Ukraine the best deal possible but realize that Nato membership or a return of all land is probably not on the table.

There will be no US military presence in Ukraine afterwards. The US does not want the headache and the Russians would never accept it. The mineral rights deal is not just a US money grab. It makes Ukraine a vested US business interest which would act as a Russian deterrent.
