Birmingham (UAB), is are currently building a new biomedical research facility for research into things like diabetes, strokes, Alzheimer's to heart disease and cancers to expand their current efforts.
They get hundreds of millions of dollars from the National Institute of Health (NIH).
Birmingham's reliance on biomedical research came after the steel industry it was built on collapsed in the '70s and '80s. Last year, UAB received about $330 million from the NIH.
This is not just Birmingham's largest employer, this is the state of Alabama's largest employer.
If NIH funding is blocked, this will disrupt businesses, restaurants, real estate, housing, etc...and people will lose jobs in their local community, in addition to disrupting vital medical research that has saved lives.
64% of people in Alabama voted for Trump, largely in part to improve the economy.
Do you think cutting/blocking NIH funding will have a major impact in Alabama? Specifically in Birmingham?
