the Federal Dept of Ed needs to be eliminated or massively scaled back. Teachers unions control that department. At the state and local level teacher's unions have very little power. In Kansas and Missouri the teachers' unions negotiate contracts, that's pretty much it. They have almost no say in curriculum or teacher standards.
The claim that teachers are part-time is another misnomer. Most teachers now work from early August through May, yes that is a ten-month contract. But teaching is one of the only professions that I know of that requires people to continuously take classes, on their own dime just to retain the job they currently hold. I am one of the very few teachers I know of who does not have a masters degree, many have multiple. I don't because I have coached a majority of my 35 years and it is very difficult to complete a degree while doing that. But I still have almost 50 hours of graduate credit.
No one has ever claimed that teachers are angels, there are almost four million US teachers, of course, that is going to include a number of bad apples. Teachers have daily access to children so that would make it a very attractive job for a certain sick mindset. I believe that many districts are more concerned with protecting their image than they are with protecting their children and that needs to be addressed. But until someone acts there is not much you can do to weed out the bad actors.
