in the past losing your championship game mattered. Penn St only dropped from 3 to 4 after losing in the Big 10 final. In the past, that absolutely would drop them further. Texas went from 2 to 3 losing the SEC title game. That too would have dropped them further in year's past.

History doesn't support your contention. ND would have absolutely jumped either or both of Penn St and Texas in prior years.
