"incomplete" after 5 seasons, but consider...
He has had 4 regular recruiting cycles (not counting this year) and has signed 3 pretty highly sought after high school QB's. Macon was a mistake that I never bought into, but Drink did land him over other schools.
Garcia was a pretty well chased transfer that we got but we lost on Daniels and now Moss.
The situation here is that Drink has made it very clear that he prefers an experienced QB over youth...even youth that is probably more talented...when he has the option. Recall that he initially started Robinson even though Robinson had already failed as a P5 QB and was kind of forced into Bazelak.
When Cook took over, there wasn't much option, and then Cook had experience which Drink clearly preferred over other options available like Horn.
I'm not arguing that Horn was ready when he came in, but he is a better arm talent.
So, I'm not willing to say that Drink CAN'T get good QB's, but I am willing to discuss his lack of willingness to go with talent over experience. What will he do next season? This is his chance to start to settle the QB debate. Will he get a starter caliber transfer? Will he give Horn a legit chance if no transfer comes? Will he just go with the experience of Pyne?
I don't really like getting into the debate that QB cost us 2 playoff appearances, but it is definitely possible and maybe probable.
Cook played well enough in 2023 that we shouldn't really be on his ass, but a top notch QB very likely could have turned the two losses into wins.
This year, Cook did not play very well and I'd argue that QB play was pretty much THE reason for the SCar loss. The other two games are tougher to predict. The Bama game wouldn't have been a blowout with better QB play and some offense to keep the D off the field. Could we have won? Dunno. I'd argue better QB play would have probably made the A&M game closer but I think enough other things happened that our spirit was broken early and we weren't winning after the missed PI and the TD was called back.
