If Mizzou spends money like SEC teams why did

Vitello coach Tennessee to a baseball championship last year when Vitello played, coached and wanted very much to be head coach at Mizzou?

Why did they choose Gates for basketball who wasn't even on any list I saw of people who were being contacted for SEC jobs that year? Mizzou cheaps out and a winless season happens in year 2.
