They could pretty easily switch from senile Joe to Krazy Kamala since the money was donated to their campaign. Any other candidate would have had to give all of the money back to the donors and ask them to donate again.

There would have also potentially been an ugly battle leading up to the DNC which would have potentially wounded all of the candidates.

It was quick and easy for them to put Kamala up and hope they could sow enough hate against Trump to carry her across the finish line.
