No one has done a decent/in depth piece on Coaching grades. Which I think is needed after the TAM game. This is my amateur version of what I would want to see, using my opinions of course.(I apologize for the grammatical errors)
This is my take on the primary position coaches/coordinators that are on staff, based off overall results under Drink.
Coach Luper(Runningbacks): Luper has produced some very productive RBs in his time at Mizzou(Badie and Schrader) Noel is doing relatively well and Luper earns an (A) overall for his production.
Coach Pogue(cornerbacks): Producing two NFL CBs is impressive. His position is one of the toughest to coach. The new starters are filling in big shoes, but I think he can coach them up based off what we have seen in the past. Overall grade for Pogue is a (B+)
Early(Defensive ends): His tenure at Houston speaks for itself, but can he start getting production in the SEC? We are half way through the season and its been underwhelming at best. (C+) He needs to find a consistent compliment to J Walker.
Al Davis(Defensive tackles): His 2023 group was filled with veterans and leadership. Can he replicate this with new faces and youth? So far, the D line has looked decent against running qbs, but couldnt stop the run against TAM. Davis gets an overall (B) for his body of work.
Erik Link(special teams/TE's)- He had an embarrassment of riches with the thicker kicker, he also designed the fake against Kentucky and has utilized M. Johnson well on punts/kickoffs. S/P Teams was really inconsistent early in his Mizzou tenure, and TE's overall under his tenure is mediocre at best, besides some Norfleet highlights and trick plays. Overall body of work: (C+)
B Jones(offensive line)- The offensive line was a friggin unit last year, and he took the best of what we had for outside/inside zone play. This year, he is struggling to solidify the o line early and it shows. Overall body of work for B Jones is a (B). I give him grace, because he started over with LT/LG this year. He will drop to a C if he cant correct it by Bama.
DJ Smith(linebackers)-He has been around for a while and has had some highlighted talent under his wing (aka Bolton and Hopper). DJ also is a good recruiter which boosts his score. Under Baker, DJ smith shined. This year, its been underwhelming. Overall grade- (B) due to his recruiting, development of some NFL talent and production in 2023.
Peeler(WRs)- Talk about embarrassment of riches. Peeler has had an up and down career, but has had the privilege of coaching some big time talent. Whether that is DK Metcalf or Luther Burden, Peeler is no stranger to coaching talent. Considering the amount of talent he currently has/had and the lack of explosive plays/consistent ball catching from the players. He earns a (C+)
Batoon(DC/safeties)- I want to like Corey Batoon, and I appreciate the defensive schemes for the four games. But that TAM game is a major skid mark on his Mizzou resume. He also had the honor of working with a defensive guru head coach at South Alabama. He has been doing this for a while, so I know he knows his stuff. Under Drink, I give him a (B-). If we have another TAM showing, that drops to a C for his Mizzou tenure.
Moore(OC/QBs)- Ill keep this relatively short, because I could rant. He walked in with two 5 star receivers/good o line/Schrader last year. Now he has one of those this year. It shows. Also, Brady has not improved and it shows with a sub par o line. His play calling is also not very adaptive(TAM game showed it) Im not a believer in Moore, and I hope he proves me wrong. He is a (C) because he was the right hire for 2023(Though I think there are plenty of OCs who could have done what he did in 2023). If he doesnt show progression this year, it moves to a borderline D+ for his Mizzou tenure.
Drink(HC/QBs)- Great recruiter/culture guy/good face for a program. I have been impressed by his own development as a head coach, even at our expense as a fan base. I think he has made three/maybe four good hires and a couple bad hires. Biggest complaint-he should have landed an elite QB in the portal for the 2023 team.
In 2024- he is clearly missing pieces that got the team over the "hurdle". He is also stuck on the Brady train due to his miss in the portal at the end of 2022.
The combination of not getting the QB position to the elite status we needed, some bad hires/team on the field discipline issues, losing some bad games(Aub '22/Kstate '22/TAM '24) plus his overall body of successful work(recruiting, NIL, booster support, 2023 season results) I would give Drink an honest (B+). If he had landed us the next Chase Daniel in 2022, I would have that at a solid A- or A.
