This is correct. Missouri democrats were always conservative, patriotic, nationalist and averse to social changes driven by the coastal liberals. I think Carter's grain embargo against Russia in combination with inflation, high interest rates and the recession already underway devastated rural Midwestern and Southern economies. In the 1980 election Missouri swung over to Reagan by a wide margin. Missouri elected a significant number of republican Governors and Senators in following decades. Successful democrat candidates learned to portray themselves as pragmatic moderates.
