those were years after having many years of surpluses. The university wasn't "bailing" the AD out in those situations. They either had the reserves setup to handle years in the red or the AD takes out loans to cover the shortfall. And most of those years in the red were around COVID times and after having to fire high-price coaches. And those shortfalls were paid off in the more recent years by making loan payments. So no, the university doesn't bail out the AD. The AD is absolutely a net positive in terms of revenue for our university.
